LGF Seminar – Aditya Shukla – October 12, 2026

An LGF seminar will take place on Monday, October 12, 2026, at 1:30 PM in room J3.03, presented by Aditya Shukla, a postdoctoral researcher at ESRF (The European Synchrotron, Grenoble), invited by Andras Borbely.

Title

Diffraction imaging as a tool to understand the multiscale nature of polycrystalline microstructures

Abstract

The properties of polycrystalline materials are governed by their three-dimensional microstructure , grain orientations, boundary character, internal strain and second-phase particles. Yet most of what we know about microstructure evolution comes from surface or near-surface techniques. In this talk I will present a hierarchical approach to bulk 3D characterization using high-energy X-ray diffraction imaging, spanning orders of magnitude. I will focus on recent developments in scanning 3DXRD and dark-field X-ray microscopy, and on my own contributions to both. I will showcase the utility of these methods across different fields, with examples including grain boundary segregation in solar cell materials and abnormal grain growth in Nickel metal.
