Jacquet Prize from SF2M for Best Photograph Awarded to Ulysse Gaumet

Ulysse Gaumet, a doctoral student at the laboratory, has won the Jacquet Prize from SF2M for best photograph. Ulysse is working within the DeMAIN project and is supervised by Jenny Faucheu (SURF team), Clémence Petit (MPE team), and Julien Favre (PMM team).
The image (reproduced below) shows the oxidation of copper powder after a debinding cycle in air. This powder was suspended for the fabrication of a part produced via the Robocasting additive manufacturing process. During debinding at 400°C, the copper powder oxidizes, forming a thick layer of Cuprite (Cu2O) as well as a thin layer of Tenorite (CuO). CuO nanowires then appear on the surface, caused by atomic diffusion of copper from the grain boundaries to the powder surface. This nanowire growth phenomenon covers the entire powder surface, resembling a burr which, when opened, reveals the unoxidized copper powder that can represent a chestnut.
