LGF Seminar – Marcelo Demetrio De Magalhaes – June 4, 2026

Marcelo Demetrio De Magalhaes, a post-doctoral fellow at the ESRF in Grenoble, invited by Clémence PETIT, will give a seminar on June 4, 2026. Marcelo Demetrio De Magalhaes completed his PhD at the MATEIS laboratory, where he worked with G. Kermouche, S. Kalacska, and S. Sao Joao. He won the best thesis award at the Annual Meeting of the French Ceramic Group in March 2026.

Title

Multimodal Characterization of Phase Transformations in Zirconia Ceramics

Abstract

Transformation-induced plasticity (TRIP) and shape-memory behavior in ceria-stabilized zirconia ceramics will be presented through the study of 12Ce-TZP micropillars at the microscale. Particular emphasis will be placed on the characterization techniques used to investigate the martensitic tetragonal-to-monoclinic phase transformation, including in-situ microcompression coupled with synchrotron Laue microdiffraction, EBSD, and SEM/ESEM heating experiments. The main results obtained using these complementary approaches will be discussed, highlighting the influence of crystallographic orientation, grain boundaries, and microstructural defects on transformation initiation, propagation, and reversibility. The seminar will also present current work at the ESRF ID03 beamline, focused on Dark-Field X-ray Microscopy (DFXM), studying 3D microstructure evolution, strain localization.
